This spring, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the greatest catastrophe in world history in the midst of a Zeitenwende that has brought not only the return of war to Europe but also the gravest challenges to global peace and order since 1945. It thus seems more imperative than ever to reassess the meaning and consequences of the Second World War – and to highlight the deeper lessons that can be drawn not only from its pre-history and unprecedentedly destructive escalation but also from the radical reordering of the world in its aftermath. These will be the core themes and questions addressed by the international historian Patrick O. Cohrs both in his talk and in a subsequent conversation with the eminent historian and Zeitgenossen Christian Meier, at a special event organised by the Foreign Policy Association in Munich on 8th May 2025.
